About Lynne Taylor
Hi, my name is Lynne Taylor and I’m an Australian textile artist who absolutely loves working with fabrics. Around age 15 I started making my own clothes, always altering the paper patterns so as to make the garment ‘mine’. Later, at the request of a friend who was an interior designer working on projects for John Kaldor fabrics, I began making soft sculptures (padded pictures) and a range of free-standing fabric cactii, to incorporate into a promotional campaign for their newest line of fabrics. These works sparked my interest in making things with fabrics other than clothes and, from then on, textile art developed into a passion as I became fascinated with colours and textures, and fabrics that had that ‘something special’ about them.
I now use many embellishment techniques (including block printing, applique, faux chenille, fabric collage and machine embroidery, silk painting and dyeing, to create one-off wearable art garments and accessories, while continuing to explore new methods and creative concepts. I tend to sew intuitively, varying the use of colours or fabric layouts each time, so that everything I make is truly ‘one of a kind’.
My garments have featured in Australian Machine Embroidery magazine (one of which was a Cover story), and among my clientele is Dame Diana Rigg who purchased one of my jackets.
I am one of 3 members of a group called ‘Artizen’ (see my Exhibition pages), as well as a member of the North Shore Craft Group. I was also honoured with life membership of the Australian Textile Arts & Surface Design Association in 2008.
Over the years I have attended many workshops on design techniques and practical applications including block printing and screen printing, machine embroidery, colour and design, felt-making and pattern-making. I also do a lot of research over the internet to keep up-to-date with the latest techniques and tools.
I moved house in November 2014 and since then haven’t done any creative work as I wanted to have a break while I was settling in to my new home. I have decided to keep working with silk, mainly dyeing/painting silk scarves, but I also want to explore different mediums. It’s an exciting time to decide on a different creative path and follow it with the excitement of not knowing exactly where it will take me.
